"CATCH Healthy Habits" with OASIS and PRR
Project Read and Reach is fortunate to have recently partnered with "CATCH Healthy Habits", an OASIS program that teaches children about good choices for a healthier life. OASIS is a national organization founded in St. Louis, MO, dedicated to promoting a healthy active lifestyle for adults fifty and older. A key component of OASIS is engaging adults to work with and tutor children in schools across the nation.
For the next eight weeks, a team of OASIS volunteers will visit Lincoln and Blackhurst PRR on their Wellness Wednesdays to educate students on two main topics: healthy food choices and how to keep your body moving to stay fit while having loads of fun! Students will learn how to distinguish which foods are "Go Foods" (proteins, good carbs, fruits and vegetables) and which are "Whoa Foods" (foods high in fat, salt, and sugars). PRR kids will get to find out firsthand about tasty, healthy snacks as OASIS volunteers prepare a different treat each week for students to enjoy. PRR students will also be given snack recipes to take home and share with their families. Following snack and a short lesson, PRR kids will exercise through OASIS-led games and activities designed to give a good cardio work out. OASIS has provided both PRR sites with loads of game equipment from balls and parachutes to hula-hoops! "CATCH Healthy Habits" offers opportunities for kids to learn, grow, and stay fit while building relationships with dedicated adult volunteers in the community.
